Key Elements of Ron Fletcher Based Pilates:

PERCUSSIVE BREATHING

Percussive breathing is a development that stems from over fifty years of careful teaching and observation. Ron defines percussive breathing as “a breath with sound and rhythmic beats.”  His emphasis and insistence on breathing as a part of movement was in response to working with Joseph and Clara Pilates as well as with Martha Graham.  Joseph Pilates emphasized the importance of breathing but did not fully develop a structured technique that could be taught, nor one in which changes in the breath patterns could be observed.  All Ron Fletcher Work employs percussive breathing to activate the muscles of inspiration and expiration within the movement pattern.  There is no Ron Fletcher Work on floor or on equipment without percussive breathing. It is taught and appreciated by students of Ron Fletcher as an integral part of an intelligent movement program.

STANDING AND CENTERING
Ron Fletcher begins class with standing and centering. Traditional Pilates mat work does not place emphasis on vertical posture.  In a clinical or coaching situation, assessment for postural problems is usually diagnosed with a patient or a student in a standing position. Beginning class in standing posture reminds the student that vertical posture is an important part of good health and proper maintenance of the inner architecture of the body.  It also reminds the student that the goal of movement begins in the body and not on equipment. This vertical posture also teaches the student to place emphasis on core posture in daily activity.   Ron Fletcher uses specific, visual cues to help the student understand the basic concepts of correct posture through sensory imagery.  The standing and centering cues become a foundation for reference throughout the program as the work proceeds to floor and equipment.

TOWELWORK

Towelwork is a signature feature of The Ron Fletcher Work. Ron developed the full syllabus of towel exercises over years of working with students. Others have borrowed the innovation of  Towelwork and call it Pilates Towel Work not giving credit to Ron. Towelwork was a direct response to the need for student understanding of shoulder girdle stabilization and arm movement. Basic Towelwork can be taught to beginners as an easy and effective home exercise program. Towelwork is versatile and can be adapted from classical standing Towelwork into seated positions. Towelwork is also integrated into the equipment work on the spinecorrector. The Ron Fletcher Work has developed and incorporated a wide spectrum of Towelwork extending from simple range of motion exercises into beautiful complex movement patterns that challenge the advanced student of movement

From Jan Singer:

I fell in love with Ron Fletcher based Pilates because of Ron Fletcher, 85+.  His attention to details from learning from Joe and Clara Pilates and dancing with Martha Graham really makes sense to my body.  Getting to work with him and his terrific team of master teachers is a joy and challenge.  As a Ron Fletcher Pilates student for 12 years and teacher for 8, I have personally seen and experienced the powerful healing of this work as a tool for (re)claiming and empowering the body.  It’s a great excuse to return to Santa Barbara and learn from my first teacher.  It also is fun to practice with my daughter and keep me strong for my grandkids.  I am the only Wisconsin Ron Fletcher teacher licensed by the Ron Fletcher Program of Study to teach Fletcher TowelWork and Fletcher Spine Corrector Work.

Ron Fletcher Work is practiced primarily standing and sitting. It is great for post-pregnancy bodies and post 30-40-50-60+ year old female and male bodies.

I look forward to sharing this wonderful work with you and helping you change your life!
